Interesting comments
This afternoon a nice gentleman stopped to look at the calves. He was very nice to talk to and it was a pleasant way to end my day. One thing he said has made me scratch my head several times this evening. He asked about one particular calf and wondered what it would take to get it bought on the sale. In a nutshell, my response was that he needed to have the final bid. I seriously think he was surprised when I explained to him that all of these calves were here to sell. They have a base bid on them and if somebody offers that price and is the only bidder, they will own the calf. It has happened many times in the past. In fact some of those one bid calves have gone on to win some pretty big shows! Now I may be blonde (Yes, it's for real!) but it bothers me that some people might think that we won't let a calf go if it doesn't bring some big price that we think the calf is worth or that we run the bids up via phantom bidders. One year we raised a heifer that I wanted to keep as a replacement breeding piece or donor. I lost the rock/paper/scissors game and we offered her on our sale but we based her at $7500. I was happily depressed when she got her first bid because I knew she was leaving even if that was the only bid. I have no intentions of playing bidding games. Like the old saying goes...everything has its price and that is what it was going to take for her to leave. That is why we have an individual floor on each calf. That's what it will take for it to have a new home. OK, not EVERYTHING has a price. Just try to get me to put a price on my dog...or my husband!!
